Inspiration for Her Cozy House

Her Cozy House was my big, beautiful, beloved home where I raised my children. It was a house where each of us had a favorite spot, and where happy noise, music, children’s voices, and laughter filled the air.

For my son, it was the train room, as he called it: an area in the basement with a large table and a few rails on it. Over the years, he transformed it into a magnificent train layout, with railroads climbing mountains, winding through tunnels, crossing bridges, stopping at stations, and cruising along a lake.

My daughter adopted one of the two backyard kennels adjacent to the house and turned it into her dolls’ house, or rather, her dolls’ estate, where she entertained her friends for hours.

The smallest guest room on the second floor, overlooking the front yard, became my husband’s office and favorite retreat. He decorated it with our framed diplomas and spent many evenings after work there, listening to his favorite music while attending to projects and paperwork.

As for me, I was especially fond of the small kitchen that opened onto the dining area. The walls displayed porcelain souvenirs from the countries I had visited. In the corner, a birdcage hung from the ceiling, where Birdie, our well-trained yellow parakeet, lived happily, flying in and out through the open door.

When the children left for college, our big, cozy house suddenly felt empty. Every morning, I would visit their bedrooms and favorite spots, shedding a few tears and praying for their well-being.

Then came the day we downsized and sold the house, a heartbreak to say the least. I took pictures of every room, every corner, and both the front and back yards, where we had hosted so many wonderful parties and celebrations.

Ten years later, my husband and I revisited our house, now occupied by a young family with four little girls. The new owners had remodeled much of it. The train room and the dolls’ kennels were gone, the kitchen and dining area had been enlarged, and the office had been painted pink. Yet as we stood there, I heard the same happy sounds and laughter that had once filled our cozy house and helped shape so many cherished memories.
